About

Mission

Residents Working Against Huron River Flooding engage in creative ways to minimize flooding along the Huron River and surrounding areas (e.g., Ore Lake). We also share information about resources for raising structures and about upcoming flooding events.

Projects and Partners

Residents Working Against Huron River Flooding is part of the Thriving Earth Exchange which partners this organization with two hydrologists to investigate the amount and extent of upstream water inputs into Ore Lake and the surrounding region. This is an ongoing project and further information will be provided as the project continues. You can find more information about this work here

This organization is a member of Anthropocene Alliance, which will help us gather information about how to respond to the flooding issues in our community.

Dr. Amber S. Bismack

Dr. Amber S. Bismack is an Assistant Professor of Science Education and the founder of the organization, Residents Working Against Huron River Flooding. As a resident in the Huron River watershed, she experienced multiple floods including two that forced her and her family to leave her home. Concerns about the increased flooding in the region led her to create the organization, Residents Working Against Huron River Flooding, to bring together neighbors, community members, local government, and environmental organizations to work together to address the flooding issues along the Huron River. Amber serves on the Hamburg Township Flood Prevention Committee and the Huron River Watershed Council Board of Directors. Her extensive experience communicating and researching science in schools and communities allows her to be a vocal leader and educator of the needs of environmental reform in a continually flooding community.

Diane Henry is a community leader and co-founder of the organization, Residents Working Against Huron River Flooding. She is a long-time resident who experienced multiple floods and has been supporting neighbors and community members throughout these traumatic events. Diane has been working on regional flooding issues for a while as a long-time member of the Hamburg Township Flood Prevention Committee and also supports neighbors as the President of the Ore Lake Resorts Association. She is also a natural leader on the ski slopes when she organizes training and other events as part of nationally recognized Mt. Brighton Ski Patrol.
